For this project, you will research and write an analytical report on a professional issue or question about which you have strong concern. Analytical reports can take many forms but for our purposes, we will limit our inquiry to one of the following: (1) a causal analysis, which seeks to find out why something happens; (2) a feasibility analysis, which tries to determine if something is a good idea; or (3) a comparative analysis, which asks which choice is better for a particular outcome. You have the following assignment options:
Option A: When you have a good grasp of the issue you’ve chosen, write a carefully developed causal analysis on why your issue occurs. Be sure to analyze the primary and possible secondary audiences who will read your report to identify the specific reasons for “why does X happen?” or “what are the effects of x?” in order to make a decision.
Option B: Address the specific concerns about your issue and design a specific strategy to help solve a problem related to your issue. In your feasibility analysis, examine why your idea is a good one, and what limitations it may have. Your focus is on exploring a strategy to deal with an issue or problem. A feasibility analysis seeks to answer the question, “is X a good idea?” or “is it reasonable to carry out X?”
Option C: Offer a comparative analysis detailing what is best for a specific purpose. You might, for example, outline why one procedure or method is better than another. Relate your topic to a practical issue that will be helpful for your readers.
Read Lannon, Ch. 21, “Formal Analytical Reports.” Pay particular attention to the description of the three kinds of analyses (p. 491) and the elements that create an effective analysis (p. 491-510).
Begin your research. For this project, you will need to use a minimum of four sources. Of those four, two must be scholarly (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.). Of the two scholarly sources, no more than one of them can be from a .gov website. If you use a .gov website as one of your scholarly sources, the second scholarly source must be from a peer-reviewed journal (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.). Of course, all four of the sources must be of good quality, based on the work we have already done on what constitutes a credible source!
