My Prompt Question:
Does China’s activities such as building a bomber capable airstrip on Mischief reef located in the South China Sea (SCS) pose a security threat to U. S. interests in the region? And, if so, what are the specific challenges?
My attempt at thesis statement:
Mischief reef is not just a shoal of rock that multiple states have competing claims of sovereignty over; the reef’s geostrategic location presents activities, such as China building a platform capable of military activity as a security threat to INDOPACOM. In addition, Mischief Reef has a broader economic impact due to its location within a highly traveled trade route that connects the middle east to Asian ports.
Sub topics to thesis:
Three primary arguments support this thesis; the first argument is that Mischief Reef is a contention point between multiple states in the SCS holding historic and legal sovereignty claims. Secondly, The Mischief Reef is in a much larger contested environment of the South China Sea, which features multiple contested maritime features between China and other states bordering the SCS. The third is the impact on the United States’ and its allies’ economic interest due to military activities to include long range anti-ship capabilities on Mischief Reef causing instability.
