INSTRUCTIONS FOR RESEARCH MEMORANDUM
TOPIC: Economics of Crowd Funding
You are a student helping a professor develop a study of the economics of crowd funding.
At minimum you must cover the following topics in your case study:
Executive Summary (Summary of Key Findings)
What is crowd funding?
How have laws changed to facilitate crowd funding?
What is the dollar amount of funds flowing into crowd funding institutions?
What are the type of business projects funded though crowd funding?
How does crowd funding differ from venture capital as a means of raising investment funds?
How has initial coin offerings worked for cryptocurrency projects?
· GO BEYOND GOOGLE SEARCH!
· Internet research sources (Google, Galileo, Nexis, JSTOR, EconLit, etc.).
· Read economic analyses of cryptocurrency industry, not just superficial newspaper discussions.
· Electronic databases of periodicals (Dow Jones, Lexis-Nexis, etc.)
· Library: Books on crowdfunding.
· Business reference section of the library (Talk to reference librarian!)
· Raise questions in class (not during office hours).
RESEARCH MEMORANDUM CHECKLIST
Please read this before asking questions in class. I will only answer questions in class, not after class, or in my office, unless you turned in draft. This is to avoid repeating the same answer over and over again.
You must cover all the topics.
You must submit a paper that is 10 pages of text double-spaced + tables, references, but do not fill up the paper with junk. The 10-page requirement does not include tables. Please include tables in the text, not at the end of the paper.
You must word process the whole text, do not hand write any of it; make sure that the final product is attractive and visually credible.
You must keep a copy of your paper, hard copy and on disk.
You must conduct thorough research. One page of research is not thorough.
I am not going to conduct the research for you. Follow the research suggestions listed above. Please exhaust these avenues first.
Build your research skills–do more than internet research.
You must have at least the three Excel tables/exhibits. Simply copying tables from publications or downloading from the internet is not acceptable. The tables should be created by combining data from different sources and creating bar graphs, pie charts, etc. from that data, for example, Table 1 below:
Crowding Funding Growth
Initial Coin Offerings
Source: Department of Commerce
You must analyze these tables; material in tables must be integrated into the text.
Discuss any data limitations.
Tables must have titles, numbers (for example, Table 1 above), sources, be properly formatted and be located in the part of the text where the table is discussed. Improperly presented tables = – 5 points.
You must make an argument, don’t simply supply descriptive material without linking the facts, data to an argument; e.g., consider the argument in the following hypothetical paragraph:
One piece of evidence in favor of investing in Ghana is that other firms are investing in Ghana. Foreign interest in Ghana is evidenced by the growth of foreign direct investment in Ghana by 50 percent from 1990 to 1995 (see Table 1) following the structural adjustment plan imposed by the International Monetary Fund discussed above. However, most of that foreign investment has been in extractive industries, such as gold mining. In contrast, foreign investment in Ghanaian industry itself has been quite low, only 2 percent of the total (see Table 2). Consequently, there is not much foreign confidence in industry in Ghana. Instead, foreign investment appears to have responded to the relaxing of restrictions on investment in mining.
You must break up text into coherent subsections.
Be selective. Do not use material just because you found it. You are wasting the reader’s time.
I am not interested in your opinion or judgment, just the completeness of your research. Present both sides of an argument, if there is one.
You must have footnotes and a reference page. However, I am not particular about footnote formatting or reference page. (Eagan, 1997) is acceptable for footnotes. Name, publication and date is acceptable for references.
You must have an executive summary. The executive summary is not an introduction or the first few pages of text. The executive summary should be a one-page summary at the beginning of the paper that highlights key facts and findings. The executive summary may be in bullet form.
You must make concise, declarative sentences, coherent paragraphs (less than two pages long!). This is business writing, not a term paper. For an example of this writing style see Standard & Poor’s Industry Reports.
The report must have typed page numbers.
Do not use magazine writing style. Avoid being casual or cute.
Grading will be a function of:
1. Thoroughness of research
2. Analytical depth
3. Satisfying the three-chart requirement
4. Following guidance and covering the topics
5. Organization & clarity of writing
