purpose of our second essay is to get you to think critically of your field/major/topic and the process that goes into your learning. If you haven’t already read the prompts, make sure you go do that now! As such, my goal isn’t for you to simply write a paper to earn a grade; I want you to gain something out of it. This can be essential skills that you carry without you throughout your college career and beyond, but I also want it to help you in your specific field. My goal for you is to help you gain a better understanding of your education, your field/topic, and yourself.
For this topic, you are working in the field of “Education” and are examining either your specific field/major or an area of interest to you. So this can be something in your field or a subject about which you’re passionate, so long as you’re linking it with “Education”.
Be sure to check out this article for some context on the overall topic as well. This is not assigning you a topic, and this is not required for the essay. It’s just an article to review to get a jump start on thinking about issues in education: Amy Chua – How to Fix U.S. Education (Links to an external site.)
Very simple this week. You are going to do some brainstorming on a potential topic and provide/receive feedback on this.
I want you to come up with a list of 2-3 potential topics. Get into why you’re choosing these topics and why they’re important to you. If you’re stuck between a couple of options, explain why you’re not sure of which to decide. If you are 100% set on a topic and know that’s what you want to write about, make sure your write-up on it is detailed enough to meet the general post requirements. Think of what your connection to this topic is and in what you can explore/write about it.
This post should be a strong paragraph, minimum (at least 6-8 fully developed sentences).
Find a classmate and offer some reflection on their topic. As with our other responses, the objective is not to just repeat what was stated. Don’t just say “Good idea” or “I agree”. I want to see you putting thought into your responses. Try and do some (if not all) of the following:
Bring up your connection to their topic. Is this something you’re familiar with or that you experienced or agree with (that it is a problem)? Why?
Raise a question or two. Ask them to clarify something they said in their initial post. Give them a follow-up for what they think of a certain solution or idea.
Offer an insight of your own. Did you come across a current event that has to do with this? Maybe you saw an article or a YouTube video or a TED talk on something similar in another class.
Make sure you are being considerate as well as clear and thorough. Try and make sure everyone is receiving feedback, too. That is, if you see one person’s initial post has 9 responses to it, don’t also respond to that; respond to someone’s post that doesn’t have any posts.
Let’s try and restart what we’re doing this semester and get a better jump on the discussion threads for this unit, especially in the response posts!
This response post should be at least 5 strong sentences in length.
