Essay Assignment 2
Write the essay below as clearly and concisely as possible. You will be graded on how clearly you relate the primary sources to the main theme, which, for this essay, is Nationalism.
You may use your notes, the primary source site, and the textbook as sources. Do not use outside sources. Any time you take information from a source, you must cite it using the Chicago Manual of Style’s guidelines. You do this in Microsoft Word by going to the upper tool bar, clicking on “References,” then “Insert Footnote.” Once you do this, a section will automatically open up on the bottom of your page with the citation number next to it. If you are using a book, you will type: author’s name. Book title (underlined or in italics). Place of publication: publisher, date published, page you used. You only have to give all this information the first time you cite a source. If you cite a source more than once, you will still create a footnote, but you will just type: author’s last name, page you used. For the primary sources we get online for this assignment, mention the source (author, document, etc.) in your text to put it in context, then type: Author’s name. Source Title (underlined or in italics), date the document was written. URL address, the date you accessed it. For additional citations of the same source, give the author’s last name and the date it was written. The documents for this essay are short, so the date the author wrote it will serve as the reference; you will not need page numbers, paragraph numbers, etc. The key is to show your reader how to get to the source you are citing, and to acknowledge the authors you learned from. The editor of the Fordham primary source website is Paul Halsall, and he sometimes writes introductions to the sources. It is fine to quote and cite him, but he is a secondary source, so make sure you also quote and cite the primary source.
If you quote a source verbatim, or close to it, you must put the words in quotes, in addition to citing the source. You have to do this even if you change a few words around. The only time you do not have to do this is if the sentence is completely your own. Also, do not copy each other in any way. I will follow the SHU Student Handbook’s guidelines on academic integrity, so consult that if you have any questions.
Make sure you proofread your essay; egregious spelling and grammatical errors will cost you points.
The essay should be about five pages long, but this is not a hard requirement or limit. If you have to write more in order to cover everything sufficiently, do so. If you can cover the topic thoroughly in under five pages, that is fine.
Make sure you submit the essay by the due date. If you are unable to complete it for any reason, contact me. Never unilaterally decide not to do an essay, as it will seriously hurt your grade.
Assignment: Describe the concept of Nationalism based on class and our Blackboard site, the textbook, and the editor’s introduction to the primary sources at the Fordham site. The address for the Fordham site is https://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/mod/modsbook17.asp Next, quote and thoroughly analyze three of the primary source documents from the Fordham site, and explain how they serve as examples of Nationalism, or as good descriptions of Nationalism. Some of the authors are passionate Nationalists; some are very critical of Nationalism; some have mixed feelings. You may pick any three you would like; just make sure they are three different people. The link in these directions takes you to a cache of sources that are specific examples of Nationalism, but there are other sources at the site under different headings that can work for this assignment, so feel free to look around, just make sure you can explain how any documents you pick fit in with this assignment. Do not use any sources besides the primary sources at that site, the course material on Blackboard, and your textbook.
