Rhetorical Essay

Rhetorical Analysis Essay Instructions

In a four-to-five-page essay, take a position on the effectiveness of David Cole’s “Five Myths About Immigration.” Have an introductory paragraph that summarizes your essay. The last sentence of your introduction should be your thesis. Your thesis states if Cole’s essay is effective or not. Keep in mind that the question isn’t whether or not you agree with him; the question is whether or not his article is effective. You’re writing a rhetorical analysis, so you’re going to identify his rhetorical devices, explain them, and then determine their effectiveness. When you quote from the article, do it like this: Cole says, “My forbears were among those dirt-poor Irish Catholics who arrived in the 1860s” (170).

Be sure you have the title of the essay and his full name in the introductory paragraph. Write his title as I’ve written it above, and after you write his full name once, refer to him by his last name. Have body paragraphs that begin with topic sentences. Have a concluding paragraph that fully summarizes your essay (not Cole’s). Finally, include a Works Cited citation. It will look like this:

Cole, David. “Five Myths About Immigration.” The River Reader, edited by Joseph Trimmer, 12th edition, Cengage, 2017, pp. 169-174.

Your essay should be double-spaced, in Times New Roman font, using twelve-point type and one-inch margins. Upload the file as a Word document. You should also check your essay for fused sentences, comma splices, sentence fragments, and proper capitalization. Your name and the assignment should be in the upper left corner, and page numbers should be in the upper right.
