As you learned in Discussion 2 this week, healthcare codes of conduct and professional practice standards exist to keep healthcare workers focused on their goals and performing to the best of their ability. This helps keep patients safe and healthy in addition to protecting practitioners and businesses from malpractice lawsuits.
Let’s look at an example. Keisha has recently started working as the healthcare service manager at Central Clinic. She comes across an old code of conduct document that looks like it needs updating.

Central Clinic Code of Conduct
Quality of care: As an employee of the Central Clinic, you are responsible for providing a quality of care consistent with the positive relationship we have built with the community over the last ten years. You should work to ensure that patients feel welcomed, safe, and cared for. You are responsible for keeping up with developments in your field and using the best treatment options available. It is important that you ensure all patients receive the highest level of care available, regardless of their sex, religion, race, sexual orientation, or financial status.
Professional behavior: Both in and out of the Central Clinic, you are to uphold a high standard of behavior. You are not to be cruel, rude, or defamatory to any patients or fellow staff. You should not be found to be engaging in unethical practices outside of the clinic including but not limited to violent behavior, discriminatory or abusive language, or any other behaviors that could tarnish the reputation of the Central Clinic. The clinic cannot and will not be held responsible for your behaviors outside of the clinic, especially if your conduct is found to be immoral or unethical in any way.
Patient data: In an effort to maintain HIPAA compliance, we have a physical sign-in/ sign out sheet located in the records room. Any employee who needs to access paper copies of patient records is responsible for the privacy of patient data for the time period in which it is checked out to them. Digital patient records are to be accessed from company devices only and not shared with anyone outside of Central Clinic without a documented medical or billing purpose. Failure to comply with HIPAA and/or Central Clinic policies will be reported to the Office of Civil Rights as a HIPAA violation.
As you are training for your new role, your mentor shares that the code of conduct for the facility is outdated and missing some sections.
For your assignment, review the code of conduct for Central Clinic listed above and create a supplemental document that addresses the following elements of conduct:
